As a Kentucky native and a first-time restaurant owner, Kendra O’Garro is relatively new to the Nutmeg State and newer still to the industry. But she knows her chess pie.

Recently a traveling nurse stopped by Us Restaurant and Lounge, the Middletown eatery O’Garro owns with her husband Earl, and tried the Southern-style pie, made from eggs, butter, buttermilk and a whole lot of sugar.

Justin Vann, whose unexpected wine and beer pairings at Oxheart earned him a nod as one of Food & Wine magazine’s 10 top sommeliers in the nation for 2012, worked his final day at the pacesetting tasting-menu restaurant last week.

Vann has labored full-tilt on the much-lauded Oxheart with co-owners and chefs Justin Yu and Karen Man since the construction phase began early in 2012, All parties say the split is amicable— indeed, Vann and Yu were sighted together last week eating and drinking in Austin on the restaurant’s days off. <

Herb & Soul began last September as a catering and carryout operation in the back part of a Parkville convenience store. The offerings included interesting Southern cuisine and soul food but also typical carryout items like cheese steaks and wings.

The owners — Brandon Taylor, Yuriy Chernov and David Thomas, the executive chef — were encouraged enough by the neighborhood’s response to think about expanding or even moving. They at one point considered a property in the Hollins Market neighborhood.

The movie masterminds who brought the film chronicling Thor Heyerdal’s 1947 Pacific-crossing adventure to the big screen are set to hit the high seas again for the fifth Pirates of the Caribbean blockbuster.

Kon-Tiki directors Joachim Roenning and Espen Sandberg have boarded the Disney franchise for a new movie that is scheduled to hit cinemas in July 2015.

The Norweigan duo reportedly beat out ‘s Rupert Sanders for the job of directing Johnny Depp.

Action adventure movie Kon-Tiki, about legendary explorer Heyerdal’s bid to cross the Pacific Ocean on a wooden raft, landed Ronning and Sandberg Oscar nominations for Best Foreign Film.

Temperatures may seem mild for late May, but the more typical sultry days of summer are likely to appear before much longer.

Fortunately, several public pools and South Jacksonville’s Godfrey Park water toy will open for the season this weekend:

• Nichols Park pool will open at 12:30 p.m. Saturday. Hours will be from 12:30 to 6 p.m. Sunday-Thursday and from 12:30 to 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Information about swim lessons will be announced next week, Jacksonville Parks and Lakes Superintendent Bruce Surratt said.

• Godfrey Park water toy will open at noon Friday. Hours will be from noon to 7 p.m. Monday-Friday and from 10 a.m. to 7 p.
