A chicken (or country) fried steak.

There are two things that Texans seem to be thoroughly passionate about:  football and down home country cooking.  I’ve learned that the two can even be mixed–heck, should be mixed whenever possible.  This goes far beyond just serving up some home made barbecue while watching Sunday football (though certainly no good Texan would turn up their nose at that).  This involves a restaurant that pairs three popular NFL players and their Mom’s tested and true recipes.  Let me introduce you to Schobel’s.

The Schobel family claims that its raised its family on good food and football.  And after having a meal in its Columbus, Texas location, I can well believe it.

If you are traveling from the Houston area to San Antonio, you’ll likely stop at Schobel’s.  It’s one of the few non-fast food restaurants along a 100 mile stretch of the highway.  That’s what brought me there.  And I was surprised at just how hopping it was on an early Monday afternoon.  It seems that Schobel’s has many more regulars than folks like me who happened to wander off the highway.

Once I took at look at the menu (as well as all the family photos of those strapping young football playing Schobel boys), I knew I had to try the chicken fried steak.  After all, there is no better test of country cooking chops–just ask all the fans of Goodson’s Cafe. I told our friendly waiter to bring me the best they had–with some mashed potatoes and white gravy, naturally.

Was it the best I’ve ever had?  No–I think Goodson’s still has the drop there.  But it was still quite good.  And with a portion that was less than outrageously sized, I didn’t have to feel too guilty about eating it before getting back on the road.
